Who is a "LEADER"

The success of a country, organisation or a company is attributed to the leadership. Researchers broadly define leadership as a process of influencing people to achieve certain desired goals and leaders are those who exert these influences. In other words, leaders influence people to accomplish mission, inspire commitment, and improve organisation. Leaders can be seen as formal leader (who is given the authority by an organisation to influence others to achieve a goal) or informal leaders (who is able to influence others because of their specific skills or talents).

So, is there more to leadership than simply achieving goals through influencing others? I think there is. Being a good leader also about how well you accepted and adored by others. It is also about how well you can understand and relate to the situation to make the right choice. Rewards and punishment can certainly get your goals achieved but it may not gain respect and love from others. To be a great leader you have to understand the concerns, have patience and think through the  situation and be able to use the right approach. Then only one could be seen as a great leader.

Improving my leadership skill will certainly benefit me in any work that I undertake in future because I will be able to better understand the concerns of those who will be working me. This would guide to understand the situation and make the right decisions to achieve the goals. By being able to better relate to others will lay a foundation for trust and respect for me which will be essential to achieve the targets.

  1. Well summarised. I think vision that is shared and embraced by followers are important, without which the organisation may not move in the rightdirection. However, more often than not, we have leaders who are more imposing and impatient to mcve things along, without concerns of others. However, progress may be stalled. How do we balance task management and relationship management would likely to be the most important of all.
